From smartphones with all kinds of tools and games to many different types of social media platforms, there are lots of ways for students to get sidetracked in class and when doing homework. What can you do? Huntington recommends the below tips to offer your students: Set and stick to a schedule. The more your students structure their days, the better they will be at minimizing wasted time including technology time. Encourage them to develop a detailed daily schedule that blocks out time for all of their have-tos as well as their want-tos, including online and phone time. Establish classroom expectations. You must outline rules for digital devices, including when students are allowed to have their phones out in the classroom and when they are prohibited. Encourage parents to set rules. Your students are only with you for part of each day, so make sure you communicate your classroom expectations to parents. Hopefully, this will inspire some rules and guidelines for responsible phone and technology use at home as well. Help students build good habits. Try teaching the Pomodoro method, which has students set a timer to work for 25 minutes and then take a break for five minutes a simple but effective way to maximize productivity. Those short breaks can be used for checking social media and replying to texts. The benefit: students will grow accustomed to staying focused when its time to work. Suggest helpful apps. There are many tools that can help students be more aware of what they spend their time on and quit wasting it on unproductive activities. Virginia Tech Goes Social, Offers New Course for Students Photo credit: Steven Voss In spring 2012,  Student Adviser  recognized more than 6,000 U.S. colleges, universities, and post-secondary schools that offered a mastery of public social media methods. However, it wasnt until this semester that Virginia Techs Pamplin College of Business began offering social media marketing (MKTG 4984) to students. Bloomberg Businessweek Favorite Professor recipient  and graduate certified social media professor Donna Wertalik campaigned for the new course. It started a couple of years ago when we were doing research for the Pamplin College of Business, Wertalik said.  [The focus] turned to social media and then [we] got into the discussion of big data and measurement and how important data is in creating marketing as a hard science. That’s how I rallied people to [support] this course. Emphasizing the importance of data and analytics, the class provides students with a 360-degree perspective and foundation of social media marketing and how businesses today actively use popular platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest to interact with both current and prospective consumers. Groups of students will also aid local New River Valley clients, such as the Blacksburg Farmers Market and Roanoke Community Garden Association, in social media marketing campaigns  as part of a semester-long project that involves creating and running Facebook, Twitter, and WordPress accounts for the nonprofits. By exposing students to every format of social media and real world application, Wertalik wants students to have educated conversations about data and gain hands-on experience in business marketing. For students especially business majors and minors that experience is increasingly important once outside the confides of Virginia Tech. In 2012,  88 percent of small businesses reported that social media currently does or has the potential to impact their business, according to the  New York Enterprise Report. But its not just small companies using social media today. In a  study  conducted by Burson-Marsteller, the number of Fortune Global 100 companies using at least one social media platform was found to have increased by nearly 10 percent to 87 percent since 2010. Individually, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are each used by more than 74 percent of those companies. Clearly, social media marketing has emerged as an important marketing strategy, reads the course syllabus. Wertalik, who developed the courses curriculum, refers to the class as an offshoot of graduate courses taken as part of her recently  received masters of science in marketing at Southern New Hampshire University. I love marketing; I find it fascinating. There is always something going on it is really relevant, Wertalik said. It is that same passion for marketing that led Wertalik to found Pamplin ReInventing Social Media -  the first social media organization on campus and possibly in the world of which she is the faculty adviser. PRISM works closely with Pamplin Dean Richard Sorensen and other influential faculty to best serve and represent the college and its brand, which continues to rank among top undergraduate business schools in the nation. Wertalik believes the institution must embrace social media and PRISM to prevent inventing the past. There is a lot we can do through communication, social media, and data [to] measure the future, she said. We cant just say the words ‘Invent the Future, we really have to showcase it and do it. Lets back it up. Through the continued development of social media courses and PRISM, Pamplin plans to continue doing just that.

For the most part, new college students hit the ground running and dont get a chance to stop until the year is over. Sometimes, students will arrange for an internship or part-time job while other times students simply need to rest and recuperate from the previous semester. It can be difficult to adjust to being in a different town or state, but there are several things students can do to keep their summer at home productive and prepare themselves for their sophomore year as a university student. 1. Short-term internships Students who would like to participate successfully in an internship but also want to have some rest should consider getting a short-term internship. Many internships are only a week or two weeks long and allow students to get a sneak peek into what a longer internship would be like down the road. For the most part, these positions simply allow college students to see the office environment they might be working in while they help out with support tasks. Students who are feeling overwhelmed after their first year of college are encouraged to consider a short-term internship and enjoy the remainder of their summer (READ: 5 ways to learn about art this summer). 2. A Paycheck Getting a paycheck over the summer can make the school year a whole lot easier. Many students work part-time every week throughout the school year, but others will only work during the holiday break and summer. If this is the case, every dollar becomes more important, and summer work allows students to have more fun and flexibility during the year. Additional funds give students the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities such as clubs and organizations and avoid additional part-time work during the year so they can focus on academics. Students may even save up a little bit of money for a study abroad opportunity. 3. Volunteer work in your field Another excellent way for students to make a summer at home productive is to do some volunteer work within their major field of study. This is a little bit more complicated than filling mandatory volunteer hours to graduate high school in that the student will have to do a fair amount of research to find the best fit for them. There are many websites that help match potential volunteers with appropriate organizations, and once students turn 18, there are more things they can participate in within a professional environment. Some volunteer work is casual, and students can just attend a few hours a week while other positions are full-time and require an application similar to that for a paid job (READ: Why you should get a test prep tutor over the summer). 4. Road trip Another great way for students to fill their time while living at home during the summer is to go on an educational road trip. Depending on where a student lives, there are tons of things from natural habitats to state parks to national monuments that are of educational and historic interest. If a student travels to a neighboring state, they will be able to broaden their horizons and view life a little bit differently. Road trips are often ‘just for fun’ but they can also hold educational and cultural value. 5. Rest and recuperate Freshman year of college can be extremely draining because students need to adjust to the advanced academic rigors that are required. In many ways, just resting and relaxing after the first year of college can be of great benefit to students so they can fully participate in their sophomore year. If you’ve never tried a mug cake before, you MUST give one of these recipes a try the next time that you want to “cheat clean.” You only need a microwavable mug, a handful of ingredients, and literally five minutes (including prep!) to whip one of these treats up, and I promise that it will become a part of your standard snack and/or dessert rotation with no guilt! It is refined sugar free, gluten-free, and can be made to be vegan by swapping out the egg for a replacement flax egg. Ingredients: •2 Tbsp  brown rice flour •1/2 tsp baking powder •1 egg/flax egg •1 1/2 Tbsp melted coconut oil •2 Tbsp almond milk •1 tsp vanilla •2 Tbsp honey/maple syrup (melted) •2 Tbsp peanut butter •Dark chocolate chips (as many as you want) Instructions: 1. Combine the flour and baking powder in a bowl and whisk together. 2. Add in all the other ingredients (except the chocolate chips) and whisk until well combined. 3. Pour the mixture into a large mug (or 2 small mugs) and top with chocolate chips. 4. Place the mug in the microwave on full power for 2-3 minutes and allow it to cool slightly before devouring! Low-Fat Chocolate Mug Cake Let’s face the truth: sometimes we just need chocolate. Because when you want chocolate, you  just want chocolate!  Am I right? Well with this chocolatey low-fat recipe you can have your mug cake and eat it too, and in less than one minute! Yeah, a low-fat cake in less than a minute sounds way too good to be true but it’s actually a reality with this recipe from cafedelites.com. Ingredients: •2 Tbsp (1 oz | 30 g) self raising flour •1 Tbsp  natural granulated sweetener  to keep calorie count low (if white, raw or coconut sugar, and counting your calories, remember to add this in) •2 level tsp unsweetened cocoa powder for a mild chocolate cake OR 1 Tbsp for a darker, richer chocolate cake • ¼ tsp baking powder •A pinch of salt •1 tsp reduced fat butter, melted (or coconut oil) •2 Tbsp (40ml) unsweetened almond milk (or skim milk for an extra point) *2 ½ Tbsp of milk if using 1 Tbsp cocoa powder •1/8 tsp pure vanilla extract • ¾ Tbsp mini chocolate chips of choice (milk or dark), divided Instructions: 1. Grab a ½-cup capacity mug and spray with cooking oil spray. Into the mug, add in the flour, sweetener (or sugar), cocoa powder, baking powder and salt. Whisk to combine. To that, add your melted butter, milk and vanilla. 2. (Optional): Fold in ½ tablespoon of chocolate chips. Mix them through. Top with the remaining chocolate chips. 3. Bake in your microwave on Quick or High setting for 40 seconds. Open the door and gently touch the top with your finger tip. If its still a little underdone in the middle, bake for another 10 seconds until cooked through (not too long, as the cake will continue cooking in the mug once its removed). This cake is light, fluffy, filling and gluten free and high in protein. Ingredients: •1 1/2 Tbsp coconut flour •1 Tbsp almond flour (can sub for any flour of choice but will no longer be paleo friendly) •A pinch of sea salt •A pinch of cinnamon •1/2 tsp baking powder •1 Tbsp granulated sweetener of choice (I used a paleo friendly stevia blend) •1/2 tsp vanilla extract •1 large egg white (for a vegan version, use 1 flax egg) •1/4 cup dairy free milk of choice •Handful of sprinkles (optional) Instructions: 1. In a small bowl, combine the dry ingredients and mix well. 2. In a separate small bowl, combine the dairy free milk with the egg white (or flax egg) and whisk lightly. Add the mixture to the dry mixture and mix until just combined. 3. Grease a large mug or deep bowl (I used a cereal bowl) generously and pour the batter in it and microwave for 50 seconds-2 minutes (Depending on brand and wattage). 4. Remove from bowl and enjoy!

Here’s why you keep missing the boat on recruiting teachers ? First, imagine you’re a teacher at an international school. The first few weeks of the term have sped by in a blur of lesson-planning, dusting the cobwebs from your students’ brains, and trying to remember everyone’s name! When you’re not dashing madly between classes, you’re at your desk trying to get ahead on your admin work. While it’s been hectic, you’ve made it through the first few weeks and are starting to settle into a routine. This is your second year at your current school and you have a big decision to make. Renewals are just around the corner and you’re still fine-tuning lesson plans, the stress is real! You’re not even sure if you should stay here…the world is so big and mysterious and there are far-flung countries whispering your name… Wait, hold up ? our teachers only worry about teaching! Maybe you don’t like the thought of teachers fretting about their own future when there are students that need their full attention? But teachers are completely human. They have a long list of worries aside from just their future. The future is as big and scary and ever-present as it is for anyone. Teachers are not immune to a bout of existential dread. Just 7 worries your teachers could be having on any given day: What am I doing with my life? Is this my true calling? Will I retire here and teach the children of my current students? Are the grade twos really grasping the imperative and should I try a more hands-on project-based approach with grade three - they seem a bit distracted? Why is technology conspiring against me! Even the happiest teacher is going to have questions about their life and career They might be sitting there counting their blessings: great students, supportive leadership, lovely textbooks, access to tech that makes teaching easier, colleagues they actually like spending time with and a community of expats that are willing to celebrate special occasions by attempting to roast a turkey in a toaster oven. What more could an expat teacher want? (A conventional oven, I hear you say… but no, that is not quite the point I am making). Maybe this teacher has a bucket list, a passion for surfing or an urge to become a Buddhist in their spare time. Maybe they’ve thought about teaching in a country where one, or even both of those things are possible. Well, this is all very scary. What can I do to keep teachers? The best move for schools is to be as proactive as possible. You will have teachers that renew time and time again, but you can’t only depend on that. Sometimes it just won’t be the perfect fit, and the Buddhist temples might call harder than you like. Building your school’s online presence so that you constantly have a pipeline of new teaching talent is half the battle. That way when some teachers don’t renew, you’re not stuck. It’s also worth remembering that just because a teacher leaves, it doesn’t mean they’re done with you. They might still see the value of your school and help refer another teacher, provide a smooth transition of their classes and offer valuable insights into how to find a teacher who will love the position as much as they did. Candidates are beginning their job search earlier and earlier This is partly because renewals come around so early. The recruitment season is starting earlier and earlier and with technology, candidates aren’t afraid to start looking as much as a year in advance. Letters of intent are becoming more commonplace. And incentivizing teachers to sign them earlier and earlier is happening too. For good reason. Pragmatic school heads want clarity on their recruitment needs as soon as possible so they have more information to make better decisions/plan their recruitment strategy/tactics. Tech is changing the job hunt for everyone Perhaps the biggest reason for the change in job-hunting habits is down to the technology available today. If teachers have a hard month in the classroom, you can be sure that a bit of FOMO will set in from an Instagram scroll...and some career-related Googling is sure to follow. Sometimes just out of escapism, and other times to seriously check out their options. With information at everyone’s fingertips, it’s important that you’re putting your school front and center. You never know when teachers will be looking…maybe a bored hour on the bus, or while home sick for a week. Chances are they won’t trekking to job fairs hundred of miles away, they’re more likely to do a bit of extensive research on education career sites and bookmark any schools they find interesting. The internet works both ways. Get yourself on Google, too. If you want to have a competitive advantage, you need to make sure your virtual doors are always thrown wide open - that a curious teacher, at any stage of the recruitment journey, can take a peek inside. That if they should google something as simple as “teach in Indonesia”, suddenly your school will waltz across their screen and say “pick me”.
